Today I had the opportunity to take some pictures from inside of three difrent churches the church “tou Christou” the Church of “Agios Nikolaos” and the church “Agion Panteleimon”…..
Today in the morning we have been in the harbour…there was the church servise in the little Agios Ioannis church….
I do not know whats going on, but I still have trouble to upload pictures to this side… I try tomorrow to show you more pictures….
The church Thymniani Panagia is about 4 km eastern of Chora Sfakion below Komitades. the church was very important in the history and the Rebellion against the Ottoman , at 29th of May 1821 the big revolution of the Cretes again the Turks started there….. at an other day I will write some more about this history, at the end of May there will be a memorial ceremonation because of this.
Today I have been at the church and I will show you some pictures.
Agia Ekaterini is a church in Anopolis at the southern edge directly about 700 meters above from Loutro and because of that you have a fantsastic view … today in the afternoon we have been there and it was just great!!!
Today is the day of Agios Giorgos, Saint George…..
I want to wish all the best to all the Giorgos and Georgias and Georges for their namesday..
I show you today pictures of the three churches of Agios Giorgos which we have in Chora Sfakion….as you can see… we have best weather!!!!
Yesturday late in the evening we had the Easter Church Service ….. at midnight with the chuch bells the resurrection of Christ was celebrated …..a very old tradition also is the burning of Judas…. the children of the village make during the Sauturday all the preperations and at midnight the stake is set on fire…. always very exiting….
Today the people are sitting together with family and friends… grilling lamp and just celebrate Easter ….
Yesturday evening we had the Good Friday Procession in Chora Sfakion…. it started at the Church “Christo” … we went down all the street to Embrosgialos along the promenade to the Agio Penteleimon church, where the procession was ending….
Yesterday afternoon we were still on top near Agios Ioannis…., actually we wanted to walk to quite special point…. a dreamlike place where you can have the view all over the bay from Agia Roumeli … from Agio Ioannisit is not too far away… on top, however, as we arrived we noticed that we would have no good view and so,we walked around only in the area near Agios Ioannis…. a little down Agio Ioannis we have gone to a small church…. she is a bit further like Ag. Ioannis church to which you can get on a small asphalted street ….. the name of the small church we have been I unfortunately do not know… …, however, it is dreamlike… and inside still completely with mural paintings!!!!
And also here again… the absolutely nice silence…. pure nature !!!
Many many years ago today we probably had met playing children, women making housework and men at the work, however,…. we have been alone ….no human soul, only a few sheep have been there…. in the old district of Chora Sfakion, in the Giorgitsi!!!
It is wonderful there on top…. a look at the village, the harbour, the Libyan Sea, the mountains of Anopolis….. and everywhere the ruins of the old houses….
Moreover, there are some churches…. even if there are just a little left from some churches, e.g., from the church of the Panagia (virgin) only a wall exists here, indeed, one sees in these a few more old frescoes… few metres behind it the church Christos, also here only the outside walls exist …. then there is the completely preserved church a little bit further to the west, Agia Paraskevi…like she is keepi watching over the whole place Chora Sfakion… few metres under it also again only one wall of the church of Agio Nikolaos…. a little further behind then still the next…. once again a Panagia church….
I would travel really with pleasure sometimes in the past to experience how the life was there earlier in Giorgitsi…..
Frangokastello is a plain with a litter settlement about 15 km to the east of Chora Sfakion… the whole region is named after the venetian fort directly on the coast…. the fort became end of 14. Jhd built…. I heard once that a few Sfakioten did not want this fort to be finished by the Venetians and crept over and over again at night to the fort and tore this what was anew built… later once some were caught by venetians and in each of them was hanged in the outside pileworks…., actually this fort was named after the holy Nikitas…., however, got used to the Sfakions to speak of the fort of the Franks and then thus it became Frangokastello Franks a very usual word around the Mediterranean for the West Europeans….
In 1770 Daskalogiannis was arrested in this fort by turkish soldiers… further there also was on the 27th of May 1828 a big battle with the Ottomen. … and it is said, every year on this day the Drosulites… the minds of the courageous fighters come out rise from the walls of the fort and move in the direction of horizon…..
The whole region is wonderful…. many different beaches like this directly before the fort…. or a little bit further to the east, a long sandy beach with big dunes, the Orthio Ammo… or further in the west, the Vatalos Beach….. also the small villages in the hinterland, Patsianos, Kapsodasos, Agio Giorgos (Kolokasia) …. are wonderful….
The photos are from today and as you can see, dreamlike weather in the Sfakia… blue sky and the sun!!! And always in view the white splendour of the Levka Ori….
